Kelly Sorenson, Executive Director, Ventana Wildlife Society, spoke at the Zone XII Leadership Council in Carmel. Over his 20-year term, he has pulled out all the stops to protect the California condor and its native habitat. The condor is the largest land-based bird in California with a wingspan of 10 feet and daily flight distance of 150 miles. Sorenson has produced Condor Canyon, a documentary film, that will be broadcast nationally on PBS this spring. The film dives deep into the lives of three mating pairs of California condors and their fight against lead poisoning, fires, and DDT contamination. Their challenges are heartbreaking but ultimately these unique birds survive and are reunited. The story is profoundly moving and is bound to make us fall in love with this majestic bird. With this film, the outreach and education for the California condor will be tremendous! Sorenson needs a total of $20,000 and is asking for $3000 to $5000+ sponsorships to make this broadcast happen. The sponsor’s name will be narrated and written on screen for up to 15 seconds. Contact him directly at [email protected]. The webpage for Condor Canyon is https://www.ventanaws.org/condorcanyon.html

- Carolyn & Cindy Textile waste and plastic waste are both significant environmental concerns. The US apparel industry leaks millions of tons of plastic into our environment each year. We don’t often think of clothing as plastic, but much of it is. Polyester, nylon, acrylic and other synthetic fibers are commonplace in the blended fabrics we wear every day. As a result, textiles have become an overlooked source of plastic pollution. Waste from the global apparel industry is leaking millions of tons of plastic into the environment each year and only getting worse over time. But we all can make a difference by purchasing fewer clothes, purchasing 100% natural materials only, donating clothes vs. throwing them out, buying second hand and supporting brands that have committed to reducing textile waste like Patagonia, Madewell and The North Face.
Our First Quarter Conservation Challenge is a BIG One, with BIG potential. Join OGC members and commit to purchasing No New Clothes from January - March 31. If you can't commit, then consider committing to buying 100% Natural materials only, and donating old clothes. Together even small changes can make a big difference. Monica and Yoni The Bay Area’s Pacific Palisades: This is one of the cities most at risk of urban firestorm1/18/2025 In 2019, when state lawmakers were grappling with the bankruptcy of Pacific Gas and Electric Co., California’s largest electrical utility, they needed an estimate of how much a worst-case-scenario wildfire might cost. They tapped Michael Wara, a Stanford University climate expert, who used fire-risk models to identify three communities where a major fire would be extremely costly and devastating.
One was the Los Angeles neighborhood of Pacific Palisades, where an ongoing fire has reduced thousands of buildings to rubble and forced tens of thousands of people to flee in one of the most costly natural disasters in U.S. history. Another was the East Bay communities of Moraga and Orinda. Click on the photo for a link to the SF Chronicle article. |
