Founded in 1937, the Orinda Garden Club is situated within a group of secluded valleys and tree-studded rolling hills, 15 miles east of San Francisco. Orinda's beauty is enjoyed by its 139 members (69 actives, 70 associates) and offers a multitude of ways for its members to carry out the mission of the club. Members seek to learn more about gardening, protect and conserve the natural setting, and to beautify the surroundings. With conservation, horticulture, and beauty at the forefront, the club is deeply committed to the design and maintenance of many landscapes throughout the City of Orinda. This commitment requires considerable fundraising efforts and collaboration with City staff. At the historic Community Center, members designed a garden with California native, low water, and fire-wise plant selections. The main street medians also reflect the club's fundraising and 21st century design influence. Adorning the downtown, many large containers are filled with attractive low-water plantings and maintained by the members. For the holidays, the members create and decorate the City with wreaths on lamp posts, buildings and railings and erect a lit holiday tree at the Crossroads Park. For over 50 years, in appreciation of floral design and techniques, the club has created and delivered monthly bedside bouquets to local hospitals. Rose care is also at the heart of Orinda members' gardening interests. Since the 1980’s and for the public's enjoyment, the David Austin rose garden in nearby Walnut Creek has thrived due to the members' year-round care. With an eye to the future, the Orinda Garden Club looks forward to providing opportunities for its members to gain knowledge of 21st century issues in horticulture, conservation, floral design and photography.
