Textile waste and plastic waste are both significant environmental concerns. The US apparel industry leaks millions of tons of plastic into our environment each year. We don’t often think of clothing as plastic, but much of it is. Polyester, nylon, acrylic and other synthetic fibers are commonplace in the blended fabrics we wear every day. As a result, textiles have become an overlooked source of plastic pollution. Waste from the global apparel industry is leaking millions of tons of plastic into the environment each year and only getting worse over time. But we all can make a difference by purchasing fewer clothes, purchasing 100% natural materials only, donating clothes vs. throwing them out, buying second hand and supporting brands that have committed to reducing textile waste like Patagonia, Madewell and The North Face. Our First Quarter Conservation Challenge is a BIG One, with BIG potential. Join OGC members and commit to purchasing No New Clothes from January - March 31. If you can't commit, then consider committing to buying 100% Natural materials only, and donating old clothes. Together even small changes can make a big difference.
